if you topped them you might have fim'd them instead it can lead to multi colas versus a single or double if not that then it can be simple fox tailing that can come from intense light or being too close to the panel itself

AardVark's the man, he's got it covered there I reckon. Just one more thought, have you had any issues with the timers on your lights, and are you running them 12 on 12 off? I ask as it almost looks like revegging as well as foxtailing, but I am certainly no expert so I would wait to hear from a few others. Hopefully they will see my comment and can pop their thoughts down on that :-). In relation as to when to flush, I've never done anything bar soil (long time ago) and coco and wouldn't want to provide any bad advice. I'm not sure how long it takes to flush in your setup, sorry I couldn't help on that one!

how is the smell though? is it some gas?

With the tops, I would say it resembles foxtailing. When you get single flowers with air in between each one that's what foxtailing looks like. It also makes single shoots come out, kinda like a cactus is shaped. The only time I had this problem was when my garden got way too hot in the summer without proper a/c. What are your temp's like? For flushing you want to wait a few more days and then 3 days of nothing but water is all it takes. I just watched a youtube video and found out.
