6 Proven Tips to Increase Yield When Growing Marijuana.
1. Topping. Cutting off the top of your plant to encourage it to grow thicker and fuller is known as topping. Cutting the top off a perfectly healthy plant may seem like a crazy idea, but it's a tried and true method used by farmers of all kinds of plants. Instead of growing tall and skinny, topping encourages your plant to become more bushy, resulting in a higher yield. Topping keeps the plant wider, allowing more of it to be directly exposed to the lights, allowing the entire plant to grow stronger. As a result of this practise, you will need to extend the vegetative growth stage of your plant, as it will cause some stress.
2. Fimming. Topping is similar, but more of a 'haircut' than removing the entire top. It is less stressful for the plant. Fimming promotes bushier growth and higher cola yields. This is more of a training method for young cannabis plants, as it promotes bushy growth, extra flowering, and lateral branching. This technique surfaced as a result of people's mistakes while attempting the Topping technique.
3. Lollipopping Lollipopping is the process of pruning your plant's side branches and small low branches. Your plant will be able to focus all of its energy on the main branches once the small branches are removed. It's very similar to how trees and other plants are pruned on a regular basis. This technique is used when you don't want your plant's energy to be sapped by small branches. This allows the plant to concentrate its energy on the larger buds near the top. Removing the sluggish lower branches that often sprout along the base of your young cannabis plant will also improve air circulation. Lollipopping will get rid of the extra, unwanted parts of your cannabis plant so that your young plant can put its energy into growing bigger buds and giving you a better yield in the end.
4. LST (Low Stress Training) Low Stress Training involves bending the branches slowly so that they grow in a certain direction. This is similar to putting braces on your teeth. You might be wondering if it’s okay to stress plants, but the truth is plants are able to undergo stress, just like our teeth! The reason we stress plants is to bend our stems into a shape that best fits the available space and makes sure it's growing in the right direction. This can help increase yields, and make the most out of your growing space.
5. Monster Cropping This technique has the name Monster Cropping because it results in so many flowers, so it has almost a monster result. Monster Cropping is where you take clones of a plant during the flowering phase, replant them, and revert them back to the vegetative growth stage. This allows you to save on seeds, have have continous harvests. In order to switch the plant back to vegetative growth, you simply need to give the plants more light than you would in the flowering stage.
6. Super Cropping One of the toughest things to manage in any indoor garden is height. Sometimes you come across a strain or plant that wants to become a tree (yes we are looking at you sativa dominant strains!). In this case we can utilize several methods to keep the plant away from burning on the grow light. If you are getting close to the light still, you can Super Crop your plant. This is basically bending it once to get it to a new (often horizontal) position. It's achieved by selecting where you are going to bend your plant and in which direction. Then simply hold the stem in your fingers and pinch, twist a bit and bend. You are wanting to soften the stem enough to enable you to bend and not break it. You will be able to achieve a 90 degree angle, allowing for extra space and for the buds to grow up again.
