Pineapple Express, Sunburn, OG Kush, Girl Scout Cookies, the weed strain list goes on. Ever wondered where or how cannabis strains got their name? Well I'm here to shed some light!
Cannabis originally came from the mountains of Afghanistan thousands of years ago. So all the weed in the world ties back to Afghanistan. Honestly the coolest fact I learned writing this article!
Cannabis strains didn't start getting named until the 1960's and 1970's when cannabis growers began transporting strains around the world. Many original strains like Hindu Kush, Acapulco Gold and Maui Wowie, were named from their place of origin.
Once growers began spreading the strains around the world, other growers began cross breeding the strains to create different effects and flavors. There are thousands of crossbred strains, many die off but are replaced by new genetics.
Most cross strains are named by combining the parent strain names while others are named after the effects, smell or visual attributes of the cannabis.

Agent Orange was named as a tribute to a growers father who passed away from cancer associated with past military service. Strain names can pretty much come from anywhere. Sometimes the strains are named something random that may mean something to the grower but not have much significance to the buyer.
Ever wonder what the OG in OG Kush stood for? OG stands for ocean grown, so all OG strains originated in California.
Girl Scout Cookies is a cross between OG Kush and Durban Poison. It gets its name because of its sweet aroma and couch locking giddy high which was compared to enjoying dessert.
Blue Dream is a cross between Blueberry Indica and Sativa Haze. The name mixes the blue from blueberry and dream from the relaxing and euphoric high it brings.
Skywalker OG Is a cross between Skywalker and OG Kush, hence the name. Not all strains have a fancy cool name but they will all get you high and offer an array of varying effects! I challenge you to look deeper into your weed strain origins!
