On Tuesday, The Federal Trade Commission and the Food and Drug Administration sent a letter to former National Football League player Kyle Turley warning him to cease advertising medical marijuana products as cures for the novel coronavirus, COVID-19. The letter was sent to the headquarters of Neuro XPF, owned by Turley, in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Turley, a former player for the New Orleans Saints, has been a long time advocate for therapeutic cannabis use. In March, Turley opened a cannabis dispensary in Moreno Valley, California in partnership with marijuana company Shango. During his tenure in the NFL, Turley was outspoken about his cannabis use in his sport, saying that he used marijuana while in the league to cope with vertigo, seizures, light sensitivity, pain and foot numbness and uncontrollable anger.
“Without a doubt, cannabis saved my life,” Kyle Turley told Benzinga. “I wouldn’t be where I am today; I would not have my family, my kids, my house, everything I have right now, if not for cannabis.”
Turley also claims that cannabis helped cure his wife of skin cancer and has dramatically boosted the immune systems of their children.
“It’s resolved my daughter’s sleeping disorder, my son’s attention span, hers as well,” Turley said. “And the doctors continue to tell us they’re the healthiest kids they’ve ever seen and they refuse to give them flu shots, refuse, because their immune systems are so strong.”
However, Turley’s comments have drawn the attention of the federal government after he made statements promoting cannabidiol (CBD) as a cure to COVID-19.
“CBD CAN PREVENT AND CURE THE CORONA VIRUS!” said Turley in a tweet last month.

Neuro XPF, a CBD-derived sports therapy product company, recently displayed an entire section on its website with the headline “CRUSH CORONA” with a buy-one-get-one-free promotion.
“Your best defense against the COVID-19 blitz starts with a strong immune system. It’s what protects your body from the everyday attacks of bacteria, viruses, parasites and a host of other nasties. And if you’re in good health, a strong immune system is your body’s most powerful weapon in the fight against a coronavirus infection,” read the site. “While scientists around the world are working 24/7 to develop a COVID-19 vaccine, it will take many more months of testing before it’s approved and available. However, there’s something you can do right now to strengthen your immune system”
“We want everyone to take CBD and take advantage of its potential to help prepare your body to fight a coronavirus infection,” said Neuro XPF. “So, we’re making all of our products more affordable.”
“FDA is taking urgent measures to protect consumers from certain products that, without approval or authorization by FDA, claim to mitigate, prevent, treat, diagnose, or cure COVID-19 in people,” read the letter by the agencies. “We request that you take immediate action to cease the sale of such unapproved and unauthorized products for the mitigation, prevention, treatment, diagnosis, or cure of COVID-19.”
Turley and Neuro XPF were advised that a failure to comply, “may result in legal action, including, without limitation, seizure and injunction.”
Turley told Marijuana Moment on Tuesday that cannabis disparagers are “scared to say too much because we don’t want the government, we don’t want the man, to start coming down on us.”
“Well guess what?” he continued. “I was a first round draft pick, I made millions of dollars, god saved my life through this plant and I live in America. So get used to it...And I’m going to continue to spread his word.”
The CRUSH CORONA page on Neuro XPF’s website, which was active as late as March 29, has since been taken down.
