When it comes to zeal for content production, Devan, a.k.a. DopeDev420, has got it in spades. After becoming inspired while watching others creating vlogs and transforming their perspectives into platforms, Dev decided it was time to pick up the camera and turn her “what if?” into a reality. It was a joy to speak with her about finding a voice, embracing creativity and diving into your passion. Moreover, we discussed the hardships of going through the loss of a loved one and how even in the most harrowing and traumatizing situations one can learn, grow, honor their memory and build upon their legacy.

RJ: Dev, thank you for taking the time to answer my questions! I’ve enjoyed watching your content and I am stoked to chat with you about it.

Dev: Oh my goodness, Thanking me? Thank YOU for taking the time out of your day to watch my videos and to reach out to me. This is truly amazing.

RJ: Also, I’m originally from Michigan and I’m a big Detroit Pistons fan too. What do you think their chances are in the Playoffs this year? Comeback season for Derrick Rose or nah?

Dev: GO PISTONS! Honestly, if they keep playing like they've been playing who knows! I'm a huge Pistons fan so of course I will be cheering them on and hoping for the best outcome for the team.

RJ: So, diving right in, in one of your recent videos, you brought up the question: “if you had a channel, what would you want the viewers to subscribe, like and comment on your things?” For you, what is it that you want viewers to get out of your content?

Dev: I want my viewers to get nothing but the most uplifting and positive vibes after watching my content. That is one of the main reasons I started my channel. I hate to use the name YouTube but if it wasn't for some YouTubers who knows where I'd be? They just made me feel like I wasn't alone. They helped open my life up in such a more positive and loving way. Sounds insane? Maybe LOL. But it's so true. They helped me discover new things about myself that I never knew existed. They helped lead me down a path that opened so many doors for me spiritually and emotionally. One person can truly help make a difference in this world and that is what I am here for. I want to help make a difference in my viewers’ life.

RJ: In that same video, you’re sharing reasons why you encourage others to create a channel on TheWeedTube. What was the inspiration behind you creating your own channel and begin producing content?

Dev: It was close to six years ago when I got on YouTube and came across this girl who was traveling around the U.S. and vlogging her life. I just thought that was so cool. It was around that time I had really picked up smoking cannabis and I just thought to myself how friggin’ cool it would be to smoke weed on the internet and post it like this girl is doing with her traveling. But I never did anything about it and just kind of left it alone. About two years later I was looking up a "how to,” it was something to do with cannabis I just can't remember what exactly, and that is when I came across this sweet and kind soul. We all know her as "Silenced Hippie" I just fell totally in love with what she was doing. Not long after, I came across the amazing Arend and HE WAS DOING THE SAME THING!! They were seriously smoking on the internet. From that point I would just fantasize about having my own channel and doing just what they were doing, but I never did anything to make that happen. I was in a very low place in life and it just wasn't the right time. After Arend had been deleted off YT and he and a few others created this amazing platform I just knew I had to get my shit together because I knew this is what I wanted to do. Fast forward to early this year where I just kicked myself in the ass and told myself I'm doing this no matter what because I just had this intuitive feeling to go after my channel. So I finally did it. Come to find out after filming and editing a few vlogs I just knew this is what I wanted to do because for the first time in my life something I was doing actually felt right. It felt good. I've never really been passionate about something like I'm passionate about this platform and my channel. For the first time in my life I'm doing what makes me happy.

RJ: Sometimes the workflow of fully producing visual content on a channel can be overwhelming. Do you find that the process benefits or hinders your mental health? Or does it change from moment to moment?

Dev: Sometimes it does get overwhelming because I am learning as I go BUT that is also a benefit because I'm learning new things each and every time I film and edit. Which I absolutely love. I've recently talked my 55-year old mother in law in creating her own channel, @Mommy on TWT ha, which means more content I have to film and edit. I definitely have a headache after a day of filming and editing because I seriously get it done in one day, usually. It's so exciting to me that I just have to film, edit and post all in the same day.

RJ: In your video “10 WAYS TO LIVE A MORE POSITIVE LIFE”, you mention that you practice a few minutes of meditation a day. What other techniques do you use to bring yourself back into a positive headspace when you find yourself drifting into a rut?

Dev: I grab my crystals and/or I do a lot of breathing exercises, if I feel myself getting too worked up, that is. Also, music is a big part of my life and it has helped me out in so many ways. I like to put on a lot of Queen, Harry Styles and Matchbox 20. But of course the good ol’ friend Mary Jane does the trick.

RJ: A few weeks ago, you uploaded a “SESHIN WITH DEV” dedicated to your dad on what would have been his 46th birthday. Firstly, I am sorry for your loss and I commend your courage in sharing such a personally difficult life experience on a public platform.

Dev: Wow, thank you so much. He was truly my best friend.

RJ: I have encountered, and continue to encounter, the unexpected loss of my father. I love that you mentioned in your video the joy in remembering favorite memories with your father and how that helps you cope. That’s something I enjoy doing as well, though I’ll admit that sometimes reminiscing about pleasant memories, or even looking at photos, have a tinge of sadness for me now. As someone who went through that in their teenage years, what, if anything, do you think you’ve learned about how to live your life?

Dev: Woo, that's a tough one. Growing up, I would hear my dad talk about how much he wanted to be a "rockstar." Everytime he would talk about being in a band his face would light up and you could tell that is what he was passionate about. He would always be singing and playing his guitar around the house.  He was in a band up until his 30's and besides us kids that is what made him the happiest. I truly believe if my dad lived the life he wanted to live and he was truly happy he would still be here with us. So it makes me fight for what I want and my happiness 20 times harder. We are 100% in control of our life and I truly believe we can do anything we put our mind to. We can choose to live the life we want as long as we go after it.

RJ: On a lighter note, in that same video you said, “I want you to make sure that you are always doing what makes you happy, not doing what makes your spouse happy, or your aunt, your uncle, your grandma, your mom, your dad, anybody. Even if they have passed away, they would want you to be doing what makes you happy.” So, what makes you happy, Dev?

Dev: This! Since creating my channel it has truly helped me discover what I'm passionate about. This platform is incredible. This might sound a little strange but my channel has helped me find my happiness. Before TheWeedTube, I had no drive to do anything; no passion, no goals, no self love. I now have SO many goals. SO much drive, SO much passion and now so much self love. I was never, ever, EVER comfortable looking in the mirror at myself. To be able to sit down and watch myself FOR HOURS while editing means everything to me. It's crazy how much a person can change for the better in less than a year. It is because of this platform, and obviously a little help from within, that has gotten me to where I am today and I don't plan on stopping anytime soon if ever. <3

RJ: You know what would make me happy? Another Detroit Pistons championship.

Dev: HELL YES! I'll smoke right now to that one. LOL.

RJ: Last question, if you could sesh with anybody, living or otherwise, who would it be and why?

Dev: This changes for me A LOT because there are just so many incredible people I would love to sesh with. Right now in this moment I'll have to say Jeffree Star. That man is a genius. He's such an incredible business man and he's just on top of the world right now. He's helping a lot of things happen. I would love to just see what he's all about. We just need to get him over on this platform!

RJ: Dev, you are rad. Thank you again for taking the time for this today!

Dev: No, seriously thank you. This is just so unreal.
